Letter from the Chair

Letter from our Chair: A look back at 2024 – challenges faced, progress made, and the road ahead.

As we reflect on 2024, we do so against a backdrop of uncertainty. Around the world, communities are facing increasing pressures, from economic instability to high levels of inequalities and shifting political landscapes. The abrupt withdrawal of foreign aid is reshaping the global landscape, exposing the fragility of systems long dependent on external support. In times like these, philanthropy has a responsibility not just to respond, but to lead.

At the Anglo American Foundation, we believe leadership means standing by our values, taking a long-term view, and investing in solutions that put decision-making in the hands of those closest to the challenges. A key part of this is supporting sustainable private sector development that strengthens local economies and, over time, reduces the need for aid.

Our total grant portfolio of £22.9 million helps unlock capital and opportunities for youth across Southern Africa and Latin America, enabling our partners to lead, adapt, and develop solutions that work in their contexts. As the global landscape continues to shift, our commitment remains unchanged, investing in approaches that are locally driven and future-focused.

Partnership is at the core of what we do. This year, we continued to work alongside incredible organisations. Our role is to amplify and enable their work, ensuring young people have the resources and opportunities to thrive. Thank you to every organisation we have collaborated with. Your leadership and expertise are driving progress, strengthening communities, and opening doors for the next generation.

I want to extend my gratitude to my fellow Board members, whose insight and guidance have been invaluable throughout the year. I also want to welcome to our new Finance and Investment Committe member Nicola Toyer, whose expertise in asset management of charities will be invaluable.

To our CEO, Michael Mapstone, whose innovative leadership and strategic vision have propelled the Foundation forward, and to the team, whose hard work and commitment bring our mission to life every day, thank you.

I also want to recognise Anglo American for its continued support, both financial and in-kind. The strength of our partnership has enabled us to take bold steps, challenge traditional approaches, and invest in solutions with the power to transform lives. At a time when collaboration is more critical than ever, this commitment to working together is what strengthens our ability to create systemic change. The recent shift to a new funding model builds on that spirit of collaboration and marks an exciting step forward, opening the door to even more ambitious, impactful work.

In 2025, our expansion in Latin America and our support for the regeneration of Johannesburg city centre will allow us to build on what we have achieved while remaining agile in responding to emerging challenges. In a world that continues to shift, we are committed to staying the course, working with our partners to create change, and ensuring that philanthropy remains a force for stability, innovation, and hope.
