Anglo American Foundation welcomes new Chair and Trustees to its Board

The Anglo American Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Richard Price as Chair of the Board of Trustees, along with two new Trustees, Nompumelelo Zikalala and Andre van den Berg.

[18 June 2025] The Anglo American Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Richard Price as Chair of the Board of Trustees, along with two new Trustees, Nompumelelo Zikalala and Andre van den Berg. These appointments were confirmed on 17 June 2025 and took effect from 18 June.

The new appointments follow the departure of three longstanding Trustees: Jon Samuel (former Chair), Themba Mkhwanazi and Yvonne Mfolo, whose unwavering dedication and insight guided the Foundation throughout pivotal moments. From strategic transformation to strengthening partnerships across the globe, their support has helped shape the Foundation’s direction and deepen our commitment to championing youth.

Richard Price takes on the role of Chair at a time of strategic growth for the Foundation. As Legal & Corporate Affairs Director at Anglo American plc and a member of its Executive Leadership Team, he brings deep experience in corporate governance, legal affairs, and international engagement. Passionate about the rule of law and advancing equity, Richard is a founder and Chair of Anglo American’s General Counsel for Diversity & Inclusion. His appointment reinforces the Foundation’s commitment to robust governance, strategic support, and championing youth agency.

The appointment of Nompumelelo Zikalala, CEO of Kumba Iron Ore Limited and Andre van den Berg, Chief of Staff, Anglo American, brings fresh insight and decades of leadership to the board. Their cross-sector experience strengthens the Foundation’s ability to take bold, long-term decisions and deepens our commitment to local partners and the young people at the heart of our work.

Richard Price, Chair, Board of Trustees, Anglo American Foundation | Legal & Corporate Affairs Director, Anglo American

Richard joined the Anglo American Foundation as a Trustee in 2023. As Legal & Corporate Affairs Director at Anglo American plc, Richard is a member of the Executive Leadership Team and leads the legal, government and international relations, communications and company secretarial functions.
He joined Anglo American in 2017 from the international law firm Shearman & Sterling, where he was a partner advising clients across EMEA, Asia and North America based in the firm’s London, Singapore and Toronto offices. His practice focused on the metals, mining, energy and financial services sectors, supporting clients through complex financing, corporate and compliance matters.
Passionate about the rule of law and advancing equity, Richard is one of the founders and serves as chair of General Counsel for Diversity & Inclusion and actively participates in a number of initiatives supporting the rule of law.
Andre van den Berg, Chief of Staff to the Chief Executive, Anglo American

Andre has fulfilled various senior positions since joining Anglo American in 1997, during which time he has been based in South Africa, Austria, and the United Kingdom. Andre has been the Chief of Staff since December 2015, collaborating closely with the Chief Executive in executing the Group’s strategy. He is also accountable for the corporate real estate portfolio. His extensive corporate background spans various commodities and functions, with considerable experience in Board and Executive relations. Former roles include setting up and running Anglo American’s offices in China, India, Mongolia, Mozambique and the DRC, and the integration of De Beers into Anglo American following the acquisition of the Oppenheimer family interests. Andre is an industrial engineer and also has a degree in commerce.
Mpumi Zikalala, CEO of Kumba Iron Ore Limited

Mpumi Zikalala is the CEO of Kumba Iron Ore and an Executive Director on the Kumba Board. She started her career at De Beers in 2001 as a process engineer and held various leadership roles within production management. In 2007, she was appointed as General Manager (GM) at Kimberley Mines and GM of Voorspoed mine in 2010 and became Senior Vice-President of De Beers Sightholder Sales South Africa. Mpumi was promoted to Deputy CEO of De Beers Consolidated Mines in 2017, and to Managing Director, De Beers Managed Operations in SA and Canada in 2019.
Mpumi holds a BSc in chemical engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand and completed leadership development at the London Business School. Mpumi is currently one of the Deputy Presidents of the Minerals Council of South Africa. She serves as the Chairperson of the Private Sector Forum of the South African National AIDS Council and has formerly served as the Campaign Ambassador for the International Day for Women in Mining. She was recognised as one of the 2018 Top 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining awards issued in Mayfield, London.
