Today marks an important milestone for the Anglo American Foundation. Our joint proposal with Standard Bank and WINGS, From South Africa to the United States and Beyond: Business–Philanthropy Legacy Partnership, has been selected as a B20 Legacy Initiative.
B20 Legacy Initiatives are long-term programmes created to ensure that the work of the B20 continues well beyond a single presidency. They build platforms, tools and networks that help scale progress across global priorities.
This Initiative brings together Standard Bank, WINGS, IPASA (Independent Philanthropy Association of South Africa), Krutham, Savant and the Anglo American Foundation as partners- reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening collaboration between business and philanthropy and creating a more coordinated approach to development finance.
Why this matters
Development finance reforms and declining aid flows are reshaping how global development is funded. At the same time, collaboration between business and philanthropy often remains fragmented, with limited structured spaces to align priorities or define long-term roles. This Initiative responds directly to that gap by creating practical ways for both sectors to work together and mobilise capital where it can drive meaningful change.
What the Initiative will deliver
Working with our partners, the Legacy Initiative will focus on building a platform for long-term collaboration that can move with the B20 across future presidencies. Key activities include:
- Formalising philanthropy’s engagement within the B20 process
- Convening high-level dialogues at national and global levels
- Developing and launching Aséli Impact Capital, a permanent-capital fund
- Publishing strategic notes and policy briefs on philanthropy, innovative financing and partnerships
- Piloting new mechanisms for cross-sector collaboration
- Coordinating continuity with the United States B20 presidency in 2026 and beyond.
Starting in South Africa and moving across regions
The Initiative begins in South Africa, where partners will work together to establish a practical space for business and philanthropy to collaborate on tangible action. From there, the work will move to the United States and continue across future G20 presidencies, guided by a shared ambition to build a partnership that endures and adapts across regions.
A message from Michael Mapstone, CEO of the Anglo American Foundation
“This B20 legacy initiative is designed to shift how business and philanthropy collaborate, creating the alignment and staying power needed to unlock local capital where it can drive change. I am proud to work with Standard Bank, WINGS and our partners on an effort that began here in South Africa and now moves to the United States and beyond. Together we have the momentum and the ambition to build something that endures across regions and G20 presidencies.”
