Waves for Change: Surf Therapy for Resilience
In South Africa, Waves for Change uses surf therapy and play-based learning to help young people manage stress and build emotional resilience. Supported by the Anglo American Foundation, its Take 5 model combines movement, mindfulness, and connection to promote well-being among youth in coastal communities.
The approach is being tested globally through a study led by King’s College London to explore how sport and social connection can prevent anxiety and depression. Early findings show improved self-regulation and emotional stability among participants, demonstrating that community-based approaches can be both effective and inspiring.
“Waves for Change began as a surf programme aimed at supporting youth mental health in Cape Town. We've grown into a national and global organisation, leveraging sport to advance health outcomes for young people through context-based research and learning. The Anglo American Foundation’s investment in our core costs provided us with the freedom to innovate and experiment. The Foundation has supported us in a unique way, we don’t see many funders that grants organisations like us the licence to explore.”Tim Conibear, Founder & CEO, Waves for Change
Amathuba Collective: Creating Possibilities Through Care
“If young people think they can, they will.” These words from Amathuba Collective capture the spirit of possibility driving their work. Supported by the Anglo American Foundation, Amathuba provides virtual psychosocial support to young people in work experience programmes across South Africa.
Through regular, trusted conversations with peer supporters, young people are finding space to express themselves, build confidence, and shape their own definitions of success.
“Amathuba means possibilities in isiXhosa,” explains Founder and Director Emily Rudolph. “We are creating possibilities for youth to build a life vision for themselves and take steps to create positive realities, regardless of where they have come from or the obstacles they face.”
Looking Ahead with Hope
Across our partnerships, one truth stands out. When young people feel emotionally supported, they are unstoppable. They lead, they innovate, and they inspire others to do the same.
Mental wellbeing is the heartbeat of empowerment, it gives young people the confidence to imagine new futures and the strength to make them real.
