Hope in motion

Born from the belief that hope is contagious, RLabs puts that philosophy into action, empowering youth to shape their own stories and redefine the future of their communities.

In the heart of Cape Town’s townships, where challenges often overshadow opportunity, a quiet revolution is underway. Reconstructed Living Labs (RLabs) is not just an organisation. It is a movement, a home, and a launchpad for young people who dare to dream. Born from the belief that hope is contagious, RLabs puts that philosophy into action, empowering youth to shape their own stories and redefine the future of their communities.

At the core of RLabs’ approach is community. By centring local voices and treating young people as the main stakeholders, it creates spaces where potential is visible, ideas are celebrated, and energy buzzes with possibility. Their DLabs are vibrant hubs where skills are built, networks are formed, and belonging runs deep. Whether through tech innovation, entrepreneurship, or peer-to-peer learning, RLabs is equipping a generation of changemakers to find their voice and lead with purpose.

This spirit of possibility comes to life during First Thursdays, monthly gatherings at RLabs in Mitchells Plain. These events offer a vibrant meeting place for local talent, small businesses, and neighbours to connect and exchange ideas. In a community shaped by resilience and creativity, First Thursdays offer a space to be seen, heard, and supported. For many, it is the first step into a wider network of opportunity.

RLabs plays a vital role in holding that space open. By hosting these gatherings and creating access points for new connections, RLabs helps shift what is possible in the everyday lives of young people.

The impact goes beyond individual growth. RLabs works on the principle that change is amplified when those who are empowered help others rise. Youth who gain skills and confidence often become mentors and role models, strengthening the support system around them. The result is a self-sustaining cycle rooted in trust, leadership, and shared ambition.

"Change doesn’t come from the outside, it starts within the community. At RLabs, we believe young people are not just the future, they are the present. When given the right space, support, and belief, they don’t just transform their own lives, they uplift entire communities. This is not just about skills, it is about a movement driven by hope and action."
Christine Taphel, CEO, Rlabs

To help deepen and expand this work, the Anglo American Foundation has provided RLabs with strategic, unrestricted funding. This flexible support enables the organisation to stay responsive to local needs while remaining grounded in its long-term mission.

Across its programmes, RLabs is proving that young people are ready to lead. They are building businesses, solving problems, and showing what it looks like when local talent is recognised and backed. Each success is a reminder that transformation does not come from outside. It grows from within.
